An ITR acknowledgment is not the return. It is the department's receipt that you filed: a number, an assessment year, a form, a date. A visa window, a home-loan desk, an embassy, a CA will ask for a photocopy of last year's ITR-V. You can scan ITR acknowledgment to PDF on phone in a minute and still fail the ask, because the file is a photograph of a printout named IMG_4471, not an ITR-V photocopy searchable by acknowledgement number or by AY.
This is not advice about which ITR to file, or how to e-verify. It is how to turn the sheet already in the plastic file — the printed receipt, or the signed ITR-V that never quite left the drawer — into one named, searchable PDF. On the device. Not in a shop. Not in a family chat.
Why an ITR-V photocopy has to be searchable
The Indian ask is specific. They want a photocopy of the ITR acknowledgment: your name, the PAN as printed, the assessment year, the form (ITR-1 Sahaj, ITR-2, ITR-4 Sugam), the e-filing acknowledgement number, the date of submission, the barcode. Not a screenshot of the e-filing dashboard. Not the computation. Not last March's Form 16. A copy of the receipt, as if a xerox machine had seen the page the portal printed.
A shop xerox is analogue. ITR-V is a dense government sheet — a long acknowledgement number, a QR that CPC can read, a tinted header that blooms under the copier lamp. Contrast drops. A 8 in the fifteen-digit number becomes a 0. The barcode goes grey.
A camera-roll JPEG is worse in a quieter way. The year is in the picture. It is not in the file. Search the phone for AY 2025-26, or the acknowledgement number, or ITR-1, and nothing comes back. November arrives. A visa centre wants the last two years. You scroll.
An ITR-V photocopy searchable as a PDF is a different object. The page is square. The file has a name. Optical character recognition writes the acknowledgement number, the assessment year, the form, and the filing date into an invisible text layer. A JPEG of a printout cannot answer “which year did I file ITR-2.” A text layer can.
The portal PDF is not always the photocopy they mean
After you file, the Income Tax e-filing portal will let you download the ITR-V acknowledgement: e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns → Download Receipt. Keep that file. The department's own ITR Status help is the official path. For many CAs it is exactly what they meant.
It is not what every counter still means by “upload ITR-V (PDF).” They want the face of the paper that was printed and, in older years, signed in blue ink for CPC Bengaluru: the barcode catching the light, the wet signature, the assessment year in the header. A screenshot of “Successfully e-Filed” is a different document. A JSON from the offline utility is a different document. The full ITR form PDF is the return. The acknowledgement is the receipt.
The form itself is blunt when verification is still pending. ITR-V is the verification sheet — filed, not yet e-verified. The official text says that sheet is not evidence of having filed; the filing acknowledgement arrives after you verify, by Aadhaar OTP or the other specified modes, or after CPC receives the signed copy. Do not scan a pending ITR-V and label it a processed acknowledgement. A desk that asked for proof of filing will send it back.
One year, one PDF. A visa window that wants AY 2024-25 and AY 2025-26 wants two receipts, not a collage. Do not bind three years into one file “to be helpful.” The officer will unpick them. The loan desk may not.
What the photocopy has to keep
This is not Form 16. Form 16 is the employer's TDS certificate — what they paid, what they deposited. The ITR acknowledgment is your filing receipt. Do not scan Part B of Form 16 and name it ITR-V. A desk that asked for the return will send a salary annexure back.
Before you put the printout away, open the PDF and check, without guessing:
- Name as filed, including the extra initial payroll added
- PAN as printed. All ten characters distinguishable. Do not crop the identity block to “hide” it; they asked for the receipt as issued
- Assessment year in the header. Crop that and you photocopied a number, not a year
- Form number — ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4 — as printed. Sahaj is not Sugam
- E-filing acknowledgement number, every digit. An
8that might be0is a rejected upload - Date of submission
- Filed under which section, if printed
- Verification status, or the ITR-V instruction block if verification was still pending on that print
- System barcode or QR, fully in frame. Crop the millimetres and a counter that still scans the code will treat the page as a rumour
- Blue-ink signature, if this is the paper copy that was meant for CPC
If any of that is glare on the barcode, a fold through the acknowledgement number, or a thumb on the AY, reshoot while the sheet is still on the table. An ITR-V photocopy you cannot read is not a copy. It is a rumour of a filing.
Leave the rest out of this file. AIS, Form 26AS, the computation, the challan, the intimation under section 143(1), the refund order — those are other papers. Bind them in and the receipt disappears inside a bundle.
A photo and a PDF are not interchangeable here. PDF versus photo is the same fork: a file you can attach to a visa form, print for a loan file, and search two Julys later — not a thumbnail that dies in a chat backup.
How to scan ITR acknowledgment to PDF on phone
Treat the phone as the xerox machine. One assessment year, one PDF.
- Unstaple. Flatten. A crease through the acknowledgement number is a filing you cannot prove. A glass at the far edge is enough weight. Do not iron thermal paper.
- Dark, matte surface. ITR-V paper is pale and ruled. A white countertop steals the edge; a glossy table writes a window across the barcode.
- Light from the side, not the flash. Tinted headers bloom under flash. Tilt until the glare slides off the number and the QR.
- Fill the frame. All four corners — the header that holds the assessment year, the footer that holds the barcode. Crop those and you photocopied a table, not an ITR acknowledgment.
- One year per file. A second year is a second PDF. Name them by AY, not by mixing the stack. If they asked for two years, send two files.
- Export PDF, not JPEG. A photo is a picture of a receipt. A PDF is the ITR-V photocopy.
- Name it without the identity numbers.
ITR-Ack-AY-2025-26.pdfis a document. Putting the PAN or the acknowledgement number in the filename parks a tax identity in every folder listing. Let search find those characters inside the file. - Read the acknowledgement number, the AY, and the form out loud. Then search the phone for
ITR-V, or the assessment year, or the form as printed. If nothing comes back, the text layer is missing. You have pictures, not an ITR-V photocopy searchable later.
That last look is the difference. An ITR acknowledgment scan on the phone is a file. A camera-roll JPEG is a rumour of a filing.
Older printouts are often bilingual. Hindi sits in the same block as English. On-device OCR that reads those scripts is what makes the ITR-V photocopy searchable — not just pretty.
On-device, because an ITR-V is a year of filing
An ITR acknowledgment is not a shopping list. It carries a name, a PAN, an assessment year, an acknowledgement number — and often a refund claimed, a tax payable, an IP the portal logged. Enough for a desk to believe you filed. Enough for a stranger to map a year. Uploading it to a “free” scanner so the app can enhance the image is a bad trade. A cloud OCR copy lives on a machine you will never see.
Unlike a card you might mask before sharing, the ITR-V is the receipt. Blacking out the acknowledgement number usually defeats the photocopy. If they asked for ITR-V, they asked for the page as issued. The protection is not redaction. It is keeping the year off machines you do not control.
On-device capture and OCR keep the photocopy on the phone. Airplane mode is a blunt test: if you can still scan ITR acknowledgment to PDF on phone with the radios off, the receipt did not leave.
LumenScan is built for that plastic-file moment — flatten the print, on-device OCR so the ITR-V photocopy is searchable, files that stay on the device. Scanning documents without uploading them is the same rule, applied to a filing receipt instead of a letter.
Do not send the same PDF into five WhatsApp groups “just in case.” Chat apps compress barcodes into mush and then lose the thread. One named file, one desk, done. If they asked for AY 2025-26, send that year — not three years, and not the Form 16 they did not name.
Keep the year. Leave the printout in the file.
You do not need a new personality as a person who files. You need the acknowledgement number and the assessment year to open when a counter asks, without walking to a xerox shop or scrolling a camera roll.
Search the phone for ITR-V, or the AY, or the form. If nothing comes back, you do not have a copy. You have clutter. Scan ITR acknowledgment to PDF on phone once per year, make the ITR-V photocopy searchable, and leave the IMG_ files out of it.
